BEAUTIFUL, ONE OF A KIND PIECES

Beautiful, one of a kind pieces..... 'My work explores the traditional roles of women and the domestic sphere through the medium of ceramics. I am inspired by the decorative arts, particularly textiles such as embroidery, quilting, rug hooking and weaving, which I reference in the surface treatment of my ceramic forms. By incorporating patterns and textures associated with sewing, clothing and household items, I aim to elevate domestic imagery into a fine art context.

Using clay as my primary material, I emphasize delicacy, precision, and strength--qualities that parallel the undervalued labour often associated with women's work. My practice merges ceramic and textile traditions, creating a dialogue between form, function, and cultural memory. In doing so, I strive to challenge the boundaries between craft and art, and to honour the contributions of women whose creative voices have often gone unrecognized."

Patterning

Alexandra McCurdy uses patterns in her work to explore themes of femininity, domesticity, and cultural tradition, often referencing textile arts such as embroidery and quilting. As a Canadian ceramic artist, McCurdy is known for her intricate surface decoration, where patterns play a central role in both the visual impact and conceptual depth of her pieces. Through her patterns, McCurdy often tells stories or evokes memories, especially those connected with family, tradition, and personal heritage. The patterns become visual metaphors for continuity, memory, and transformation.

In short, McCurdy uses patterns not just for beauty, but as a language of personal and cultural expression, linking material, memory, gender, and tradition in powerful and nuanced ways.
